The new Solvita® IRTH™ is a simple yet highly sophisticated tool to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) accumulation as it naturally evolves from biological samples.
IRTH™ is an elegant and exciting means to watch and precisely measure the biological decay or deterioration of soils, plant litter, composts and more.
Examples of applications include:
- soil respiration (an indicator of “soil health”)
- decay of plant-litter (such as leaves, grass clipping or stover mixed into the soil)
- spoilage of foodstuffs (such as grains and vegetables)
- evaluation of compost stability (such as determining when active decay has ended)
IRTH™ reports the quantity and rate of release for CO2 over time from a few hours to over 7 days. Carbon mediated in the study is tracked by an internal IR cell and the result is automatically corrected to run-time temperatures and starting barometric pressure with an option for adjustment to altitude. IRTH knows the Ideal Gas Law and uses it before exporting data to be converted into a qualitative scale such as rate of decay per liter.
The IRTH™ is a CO2-sensitive “smart-lid” which fits on specialized Schott jars – available in various sizes. Once the jar is filled with a test substance and closed, IRTH starts accumulating information and will report the quantity and rate of release of CO2 over any period of time from a few hours to 7-days. By inputting information on weight and moisture in any sample IRTH will produce a report in terms of mg of carbon per unit weight.
Unlike other IR probes, IRTH™ uniquely contains a wide-range pre-calibrated sensor capable of linear response over the range of 0 to 200,000 ppm CO2 (or 0 – 20%). Thusly, unlike other IR cells, IRTH™ can be used to accurately monitor a range of active materials from low to very high, without necessary readjustment of calibration or jar volume. IRTH doesn’t have the limitations of IR devices like Flux chamber IR systems and CO2 alarm systems that are designed for low level CO2 and must flush or dump CO2 periodically to remain accurate.
When used with soils, IRTH™ recognizes the Solvita color system, a Log Scale for soil fertility much like the pH scale. IRTH™ calculates results both in terms of decay rate of CO2 milligrams and Solvita Fertility Index.
IRTH™ is the result of 20 years effort at Wood End Laboratories comparing IR, GC, Solvita-Gel and Alkali-BaseTrap systems for collecting CO2 in biological systems. It has been carefully crafted to overcome the unique limitations in all these other technologies. IRTH™ integrates effortlessly with Solvita Reader software to provide a simple means to generate lab respiration reports. Storage and export functions allow IRTH™ to provide csv files for spreadsheet tabulation and manipulation. Software can also be used to call up previous runs and change parameters for reporting.
